Background

At eero, I joined as a contract Product Designer through a software development agency, collaborating closely with the eero design team. Recognized globally as a leader in home WiFi systems, eero uses Beacons to create a seamless wireless mesh network that provides reliable, high-speed internet coverage throughout any home. The system is celebrated for its easy installation process and the intuitive management of connected devices via the eero app.

During my tenure, I focused on developing new paid functionalities within the mobile app, particularly around content filtering features. This included designing user flows and prototypes that enabled users to easily block or allow specific websites globally across the network. My responsibilities also encompassed maintaining the design system, ensuring that the enhancements integrated smoothly with the existing user interface and upheld the simplicity that eero’s customers expect.

Our support team was overloaded with calls from frustrated users who needed help blocking specific sites on the network level. Unfortunately, this process couldn't be completed through our app, which required our support team to manually do it. This manual process was inefficient, time-consuming, and created a poor user experience.

To address this issue, we designed a new flow that empowered users to easily block or allow specific domains for specific profiles or everyone connected directly through our app. This new feature reduced the burden on our support team and improved the overall user experience by allowing users to quickly and easily control access to specific websites.

Conclusion

Collaborating closely with the eero design team, I gained valuable insights into upselling strategies and the integration of digital experiences with physical devices. This experience highlighted the critical impact of seamless integration on user experience and emphasized the importance of clearly identifying the value of features to users. Understanding these aspects was crucial in ensuring that the new functionalities not only met user needs but were also worth the investment for them. This project was a significant step in enhancing user autonomy over network management, marking a successful enhancement to the eero system.
